I went here on a Friday night with three friends. The restaurant was quite busy but we were able to be seated within just a few minutes. The decor follows a theme that made me feel like their is a secret chain of Mexican restaurants opening in the great lakes area. All very similar but different enough to deny my conspiracy theory. Our waiter, I believe his name was Omar, was good. Quick service and he took care of us quite well. The menu was extensive but not overwhelming which was nice. Everyone enjoyed their selections without much to complain about. The rice may have been a bit bland for my taste. Both the beans and rice that came on the side with each meal tasted like they were going for a safe flavor rather than a really good and interesting one. I did order a sopaipilla and was pretty bummed. I was hoping for a deep fried treat with the tasty honey butter to put on it but I something more akin to an elephant ear than the tasty treats I have had in Mexico and Texas. If I had a real complaint about this place it is one that has nothing to do with the food. It's the televisions. Why does every new restaurant feel like people can't just sit with friends and talk? From where I sat there were 3 TVs behind my friends and I couldn't help but be distracted and then there was the weird choice of what they had on on them. Al Jazeera TV, QVC and a direct TV screensaver were on while we were there. Am I the only one who thinks this is odd? In the end, I did enjoy my dinner and would come back here before I made a run for the border if I was in Iron Mountain and craving Mexican food but I wasn't blown away. 3.75 stars

Carlos Cantina is a breath of fresh air for this community---the Mexican-style food is nice, the service is quick and friendly and MOST importantly the place has a BUZZ about it---people actually sounding HAPPY---there are few if any restaurants in Upper Michigan where the place seems ALIVE-----

This place is authentic. With great waiters, food, and design makes this place one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. The staff obviously has Mexican culture background which makes this an even better Mexican restaurant. The food was fast. And we loved it so much we stayed for dessert, this was also something we LOVED!!! I will definitely will go again.

This place is by far the best Mexican food I've ever eaten. I've lived in California. Texas. Florida.Arizona New Jersey. New York and I have been to a lot of Mexican restaurants. So let me tell you when I say this ir is the best, I'm not saying it lightly, I mean this is really the best Mexican food and the best margaritas I've ever had in my entire life.

The food and margaritas were great for Michigan Mexican. However, the waiter was incredibly rude. My mother ordered a meal for me before I arrived and the waiter screwed it up - common human error, right? My folks apologized and then the waiter yelled at my mother. No one disrespects my mother like that. I would return for the food but I'd walk right out again if that waiter came to my table.

What a fantastic Mexican restaurant! We have been waiting for good authentic Mexican food like this for years in Iron Mountain. The first meal I had was the Chili Verde pork tacos, they were excellent. The chips and salsa are very good as well. I will be going back....frequently!

Lots of selection. Great tasting food. Chips, salsa & cheese were ALL really good! Had a 8.50 margarita. It was darn tasty. Fast service. I would recommend coming here-really nothing like it in town. Thank God because I'm TIRED of steak & spaghetti at all the other restaurants. Yuck. Yay for Mexican!

Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. Waiter was extremely courteous and allowed us to choose our own seats. Not many options for restaurants on a Sunday glad we picked this one. Salsa was very good. Mild, but tasty. My fave of my #15 Combo was the beef enchilada. Great red sauce.

Had my first meal at this new establishment, it was very good and authentic. Chips and salsa were made in house and all ingredients were fresh, our meal was delicious. I had burritos deluxe and my wife had chimichangas both large portions and very satisfying. Prices very reasonable. A little hard to find, they need a sign outside the door. If you're not a local you would have hard time finding it.

I've been here for dinner several times and have found the food and service to be reasonable each time. The atmosphere is nice with plenty of seating choices - the bar is very tiny. The quality of the food is fair with fresh chips and tasty salsa provided free before dinner. The menu selection is huge and overwhelming (all Mexican). I'm not sure the food is authentic Mexican cuisine, and all the dishes I've had lack any real spicy flavor (cumin/cilantro etc). The heat level is also nonexistent unless you add it via their bottled red/green sauces. They could be a bit more generous by including sides of beans/rice when a customer orders a dinner. Finally, the mix they use in their margaritas is fake tasting. My gf and I ordered an un-blended pitcher with top shelf tequila - the mix ruined the flavor of the tequila. This past summer the AC didn't seem to be working making for an uncomfortable atmosphere on those rare warm UP days. A friend and I were also rushed out before we were finished with our drinks. This was after the manager insisted we pay at our table rather when we left as per usual. This happened when we arrived and ordered two dinners about 15 min. before their kitchen closed. I have high hopes for their survival in a tough, small town market. Given the fact that the owner has several other restaurants bodes well, but they will have to get consistent support from the locals to make $$. This area can starve restaurants in January so time will tell...

The best Mexican in the UP, period. I've tried Mexican in Marquette, Calumet, and Escanaba and am always disappointed. This place is great! Authentic food, beautiful building, quick service, great prices and a full bar. They also have Mexican beer on tap!

A great addition to the Iron Mountain restaurant scene. All of their food is very good and comes in large servings. The salsa and chips are fantastic and the margaritas aren't bad. I'll return.

Good service is just as, if not more, important than the food. This place needs work. I would never come to a place hungry if I knew it was going to take ten minutes to get a drink. Another five minutes to get chips/salsa and another five minutes to place my order, even though I was ready to order when my drink arrived. Then, watching my server walk around for another (at least) five minutes before putting my order in. 25 minutes to get our order in? Then sitting at my table with empty drinks, chips and salsa while watching the table that arrived five minutes after us get their food before us. The food wasn't bad but didn't seem authentic. Very bland. Not spicy at all...not even a little. The salsa left a lot to be desired. On the plus side, they have Valentina hot sauce. The best hot sauce on the planet, in my opinion...which helped flavor the salsa. I will not be going back here. There are plenty of other places in town where I can spend my money on good food and better service. Sorry Carlos!

Our experience at this restaurant can be summed up by the words disappointing and disgusting. We arrived and (2) staff members were sitting down talking, and it took a moment for them to finish to come and seat us. There were bits of paper straw covers on the floor, and after the food runner spilled some sauce from a dish our waiter stepped over the (10) inch area (3) times but never cleaned or had it cleaned up. So my family had to step around and over it to leave. The food is not authentic outside a few touches to anyone who has lived or eaten regularly in the Southwest or Mexico. The ground beef, rice, and beans were under seasoned, and appeared old (e.g., rice was dry). The shredded chicken had a little flavor, but the grilled chicken had a really nice flavor and consistency. Most of the sauces and products have little flavor and this would suggest they are not homemade, and likely store bought products. Some of the more classic Mexican restaurant dishes, like enchiladas, were fairly unpleasant to eat. The most concerning part of the whole experience was that after the initial check on us our waiter and (2) other staff member went to the balcony and talked and ate themselves. I made eye contact several times with other staff members to get their attention, and I decided to see how long they would leave us with finished plates - (17) minutes later, after our waiter had finished eating, he came and gave us our bill. The lack of attention to the restaurant floor and the disregard for customers are really bad indicators of the sanitation and quality coming out of the kitchen.

Best Mexican in the UP that I've ever experienced. They have a massive selection that's almost overwhelming and I've received good service each time I've been here. They are willing to substitute and change their usual orders with no problems. If I could eat lunch here every other day, I would.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
